The Owls looked cohesive, in-tune and exploited Plymouth’s weaknesses throughout. There was overloading, savvy movement, unselfish running and the sort of technical tweaks and mastery that goes over the head of us football muggles.
Individual performances were laden with excellence and the ultra-critic would suggest Wednesday should have won by more. Plymouth are a side that have big issues to iron out and firmer tests are to come, of that there is little doubt, but the Owls gave them a whalloping on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Here are our on-the-whistle ratings as Sheffield Wednesday got off to a flier at S6.

9. Josh Windass - 8
Registered an early shot on target arriving in the box at just the right time. Did so much dirty work, pulling defenders about and starting from deep. Lobbed in a couple of very dangerous balls from set pieces that went unrewarded. Got a very deserved late goal. | UGC / Getty Images

10. Djeidi Gassama - 7
Saw an early penalty shout turned down after jinking his way into a dangerous area. Some lovely work in tight areas, maybe drifted in and out just a touch. Looks to have beefed up. | UGC / Steve Ellis

11. Jamal Lowe - 8
Netted his first Owls goal to cap off a lovely flowing move. Buzzy throughout. Yellow carded just before the break for a misdemeanour unidentified by those watching on. Headed onto the Plymouth man for the second, won it high. An excellent debut. | SWFC / UGC

12. Marvin Johnson - N/A
On for Lowe on 74 minutes. Got forward and kept things ticking with little fuss. The fact remains - can cross a ball. | UGC / Steve Ellis
