Financial turmoil and relegation to League One twice have blighted the club as a succession of managers have tried and failed to bring back top flight football to Hillsborough.
But which Owls boss can claim to be the club’s most ‘successful’ this century? We take a look at the records of the 14 men who have been in the Wednesday hotseat since Peter Shreeves failed to save the club from relegation in the 1999/2000 season.
1. Danny Wilson, July 1998 to March 2000
Wilson returned to his former club in July 1998, guiding Wednesday to a respectable 12th place in the Premier League but was sacked in March 2000 as the Owls looked destined to be relegated to the second tier. 2. Peter Shreeves - caretaker manager March 2000 to June 200 and February 2001 to October 2001
Shreeves took over as caretaker manager in March 2000 following the sacking of Danny Wilson with the Owls struggling at the bottom of the Premiership. He did not get the manager's job on a permanent basis but was retained as assistant manager to Paul Jewell. He got the job permanently when Jewell was sacked in February 2001 but quit in October 2001 with Wednesday struggling in the league. 3. Paul Jewell, June 2000 to February 2001
Jewell only lasted eight months in the Hillsborough hotseat having been appointed to lead Wednesday back into the top flight. He was sacked in February 2001 with Wednesday struggling near the foot of the table. He managed the Owls for just 38 games, winning 12; losing 21; drawing five and had a win percentage of just 31.58. 4. Terry Yorath, October 2001 to October 2002
Yorath initially joined Wednesday as assistant to Paul Jewell and eventually became manager in October 2001. He resigned the following October after a run of five defeats in six league matches which saw the Owls drop into the relegation zone. His record at Hillsborough saw him win just 16 matches from 56 games, losing 25; drawing 15 with a win percentage of just 28.57. Photo: Mike Finn-Kelcey
