The mere mention of Messi or Ronaldo and Pele or Maradona is enough to get some supporters arguing as to who is the greatest to have ever set foot on a football pitch.
And it’s no different when it comes to managers. Is it Clough or Shankly or Ferguson?
But when it comes to your favourite manager to have taken up the hotseat at S6 there appears to be only one winner, Ron Atkinson.
Of course, there are notable mentions for others – chiefly Jack Charlton – after we asked you on social media to tell us who your favourite Owls boss is.
So, here are nine men Owls fans on Twitter and Facebook have told us are their personal favourites to have occupied the manager’s office at Hillsborough through the decades.
1. Ron Atkinson
Former Manchester United boss 'Big Ron' guided Wednesday to promotion from Division Two and also won the League Cup, beating Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley, during his first spell in the Hillsborough hotseat. His first tenure ended in controversial circumstances, joining Aston Villa as boss, just days after publicly announcing his intention to stop with Wednesday. After a spell at Villa Park and then Coventry City, Atkinson returned to Hillsborough in November 1997 following the sacking of David Pleat. 2. Jack Charlton
England's legendary 1966 World Cup winner is fondly remembered among the Hillsborough faithful for guiding Wednesday to promotion from the old Division Three in 1980 and overseeing the famous ‘Boxing Day Massacre’ win over bitter rivals United. On our Twitter page, Jon Winterbottom wrote: "Big Jack for so many reasons. He came to S6 at a time when the club was skint and heading for Division Four. He worked wonders changing the team around and he gave young players a chance. Boxing Day '79 wow and finally he left us with a very good squad of players.Thanks Jack." 3. Howard Wilkinson
The hugely popular Wilkinson, pictured welcoming Northern Ireland full-back Nigel Worthington to Hillsborough in 1984, steered the club to promotion to the top flight in his first season with the club in 1984 and established the Owls as a force to be reckoned with - guiding them to a highest finish of fifth in the 1985/86 season. He later on to win the final Division One title with Leeds United in 1992. 4. Trevor Francis
Popular 'Tricky Trev' took over the role from Ron Atkinson in a player-manager capacity in 1991, managing the Owls until 1995 and secured a third-place finish in his second season at the club. He was the man who bought Chris Waddle for just £1m from French giants Marseille in July 1992 and is best remembered for a swash-buckling style of play – with Waddle central to it – with many believing he was unfairly sacked after a season of transition which saw Wednesday finish 13th in the 1994/95 campaign.
