Massimo Luongo speaks out about his red card in Sheffield Wednesday's 5-0 thrashing by Blackburn Rovers

The Australian international was given his marching orders by countryman Jarred Gillett in just the 26th minute for a tackle on Lewis Travis, who had gone to ground.

It was a decision that brought about an audible gasp from around Hillsborough, with Monk claiming both players and staff in Rovers dugout agreed that it wasn’t a red card.

Speaking to Australian-based The World Game, Luongo said: “I’m confident the decision will be rescinded.

“There was no malice at all in the challenge.

“We’re obviously appealing it and I don’t want to say too much more [at this stage].”

Speaking after the match Monk confirmed the club would be appealing the decision but refused to use it as an excuse for what he described as a ‘horrible day’.

“Of course the red card changes it, but I don’t want to use that as an excuse,” he said.

“It’s 100 per cent not a red card. There’s no intention to it, no malice, there’s no aggression.

“Speaking to all of their players and their staff and ours, nobody could quite believe that it was a red card.

“We’ll 100 per cent be appealing that and that’s something that 100 per cent should be rescinded, the referee has made a clear mistake for that.”
