The Owls have beaten Championship opposition in Sunderland and League Two opposition in Rochdale to get to this point, so why not a top tier side to complete the collection?

There’s debate online as to whether Wednesday would be better off drawing a European giant such as Liverpool or Manchester United, or whether a home tie with Newport County or Gillingham would serve the club best in giving them the best possible route to round four.

The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup will take place tonight – Wednesday August 24.

It is set to be conducted after the conclusion of the televised fixture between Tranmere and Newcastle. Provided that match does not go to penalties, we should be underway at just after 9:45pm BST.

The draw will be done by former England star John Barnes and fellow Liverpool legend John Aldridge.

Here’s a flavour of the draws Wednesdayites fancy – and a few they definitely don’t.

@ShaneLevitt11 – Best Man Utd home, worst MK dons away

@55Zacster – I'd love man utd at home or spurs away

@smiffo74 – Tottenham away. They have Beavertown Gamma Ray on draft in.

@RobMoore18 – Selfishly, Leicester away as I am a 20 minute walk from the ground!

@tjchitt86 – Anyone but Citeh again. Would love Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, United away. Worst would be Brentford at home.

@lincartbrooks – Man utd at Hillsboro, get it rocking as we did against Arsenal. Worst away to crawly, a 4-0 meltdown loss on a Tuesday’s night.

@mattyn1991 – Best case scenario is one of the big boys at home or someone like Gillingham/morecambe/Newport at home good chance to get some more money in tin. Worst case 100% Bournemouth away.

@JohnDuncanJD – Best would love a top Prem team at home, also for family reasons would love to play Stevenage, worst have to be Gillingham away nightmare to get to

@peterhorner1867 – I'd like Spurs. But no doubt we'll get an away draw at Lincoln or Gillingham

@DeanMissere – Stevenage at home , let’s have a good run for a change

@benstorr – Gillingham or Newport at home. Get a big tie later on in the competition.

@gregyao11 – Spurs away - best ground. Newport away - worst ground. Worst drive.

@mark42swfc – Liverpool at home is the dream. live on telly, full crowd so a nice fewhundred grand at least for the club and will be playing their 2nd string…

@chris_mellish – Newport or Crawley @ home, easiest path to round 4, gives squad games and keeps momentum going

@yorkshireman50 – Understand the clamour for a top team but let them be drawn against each other so they go out one by one. A lower team for me. Let's go as far as we can.

@RobShirley6561 – Next round is just before the World Cup starts and 4th round just after it ends, so the "big" teams even more likely to rest their superstars. Would love Spurs / Arsenal away as we've never played at their grounds. Worst - Fulham, Brentford, B'mouth at home (obvious reasons)!
