Monk’s exit came as a shock announcement on Monday night, with the club confirming they’d parted ways with the manager ‘and his staff’ with immediate effect.

Chansiri said ‘I feel the time is right to make a change’, as he now embarks on appointing his fifth manager since taking over the club from Milan Mandaric, with the timing of the decision meaning that he has just under two weeks before the Owls’ next competitive fixture.

It’s understood that a number of Wednesday players were taken aback by Monk’s exit on the back of a week where they picked up 10 points – four on the field and six off it – and had climbed off the bottom of the Championship table, and there will be some disappointment among those that were brought in by him, as well as the number of players that he’d built up good relationships with.

Now though, Wednesday look forward, and while there’s been no word yet on who’ll replace Monk, a number of names have been thrown into the hat – some obvious and some not-so-much.

Experienced Championship managers such as Tony Pulis, Paul Cook and Wednesday legend, Nigel Pearson, have been mentioned, while more left-field names like Sol Campbell, Phil Neville, Benito Carbone and Gustavo Poyet have all been seen on the bookies’ list of potential candidates.

What is known is that, as well as a manager, Chansiri will also be on the lookout for a new technical team after the decision to part ways with Monk’s staff, and while The Star understands that the likes of Neil Thompson and Tony Strudwick will remain, there is uncertainty regarding other staff members.

Wednesday didn’t mention names in their statement, but it seems almost certain that James Beattie and Darryl Flahavan will be on their way out alongside Monk, and Ryan Needs – an analyst that was brought in – is also expected to leave.

An interesting one could be Andrew Hughes, who came in as a coach at Wednesday under Monk but was working with him for the first time, although only time will tell whether he also moves on or not.

It is thought that, with numerous managers showing an interest in the position, the club are eager to try and find Monk’s replacement ahead of their game against Preston North End on November 21st, preferably allowing him some time to work with the players before his debut match in charge.

The players have been given some time off as usual at the start of the international break and are only due back later in the week, most likely on Friday, and there has been no word on who will oversee their training sessions at this time.

Thompson, who is the longest serving coach at the club having been brought in by Gary Megson almost a decade ago, may be the man called upon to hold the fort while a new man is found, with Lee Bullen now working as head coach of the U23s.

Right now though, it’s very much a case of nothing to report in terms of definites, but there’s an interesting week ahead.
