The 31-year-old former Chelsea man left Hillsborough last summer after six years with the club and went on to ply his trade with Cypriot side Pafos FC before his contract was terminated by mutual consent towards the end of the year.

He clocked up more than 130 appearances for Wednesday and proved to be a popular figure among the Hillsborough faithful.

And it would appear the prospect of Hutchinson’s potential move back to S6 has been broadly welcomed by supporters in our poll, which ran from 8pm on Saturday until 4pm this afternoon (Sunday).

We asked Wednesdayites on Twitter if they would be happy to see the ex-England youth international back at the club and 1,346 people responded.

Of those, 67 per cent answered ‘yes’ they wanted Hutchinson to re-sign for Wednesday, while 15 per cent were against his return to the club.

A further 18 per cent of respondents said they ‘not sure’.

Speaking on Friday ahead of the club’s FA Cup fourth round tie at Everton, captain Barry Bannan said he believed any move to bring back Hutchinson would be a smart one.

He said: “He can play in numerous positions, Hutch, he is good in the middle and he can play at centre-half.

“But he’s a winner. That’s the biggest thing, getting people in that have got that willingness to come in and fight for the club because that’s the position we’re in and that’s what we need at the minute.

“I think it would be a good bit of business if we can get it done.

“Like I said, I don’t know anything about it, but he’s a top player and a winner. If he comes, brilliant.”
