Scan required for Louie Barry as Sheffield Wednesday star leaves Wycombe Wanderers on crutches
Sheffield Wednesday have a fresh injury concern.
A brutal and battling 2-1 win at Wycombe Wanderers did not come without cost for Sheffield Wednesday as in-form star Louie Barry was substituted through injury after just 16 minutes.
The former Aston Villa attacker had just levelled the scoring for the Owls to continue his white-hot form from a two-goal and two-assist outing in their rout of Bromley over the weekend. Barry seemed to jolt his footing on an artificial surface situated just inches from the touchline at Adams Park and had to be escorted around the field by two Owls medical staff.
He looked in some pain and was later seen on crutches and wearing a protective boot as he returned to the dugout an hour or so after he left the field. Barry will be scanned and fully assessed tomorrow.
Asked for an update on how the summer’s marquee signing was doing, Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen said: “I don't know. I'm looking forward, and I'm not looking forward. We're waiting for the assessment tomorrow to see what it is, but of course, we hope.
Pressed on the implied seriousness of the injury after any initial assessments of the issue, Pedersen said: “I don't know, honestly. Now I don't know, and now I wait. We have to test him, and then we'll get an answer tomorrow, and then we'll know... He's very, very strong. Another great goal from him, big respect for what he's doing.”
Centre-half Ricardo Santos missed out on the matchday squad following the injury he sustained in the win over Bromley and there are hopes the Cape Verde international can return sooner rather than later once the injury has had some time to settle down. “Let's see what happens in the next one, two, three days,” Pedersen said. “I cannot say he's out for 10 days or three days, but let's see what happens in the coming days. He has to come a little bit on grass tomorrow, but I don't know how much he can be out.
The Danish coach put the expected return time of Max Lowe at three to four weeks, though it is understood there are fears he could miss longer. The experienced left-sided defender sustained a hamstring issue in training last week.
