Sheffield Wednesday’s Matthew Penney will be hoping to feature for St. Pauli tomorrow as they return to action for the first time, but how has his loan spell been up until now?

The versatile 22-year-old, who has played as a left back, left midfielder and left winger over the course of the season in Germany so far, will see his side face FC Nürnberg in the 2. Bundesliga on Sunday afternoon as the beautiful game returns to one of Europe’s main footballing nations.

Playing under former Owls boss, Jos Luhukay, Penney has made 12 league appearances during his loan spell, scoring his only goal in a 2-0 win over Hamburger SV back in February.

Aside from his Hamburg Derby goal, Penney has also made seven key passes to date, though is yet to register his first assist at the club throughout his 825 minutes as he seeks to leave a lasting impact there. The Owls loanee averages 23.6 passes per game - with an accuracy of 71% - and has had a total of nine shots, two on target.

Defensively, only six players in the St. Pauli side have made more tackles per game on average (1.9) than Penney, while he’s made 10 interceptions and 12 clearances to date.

The Owls academy graduate – like so many others at Hillsborough – will see his contract in Sheffield expire at the end of next month, and up to now there has been no indication as to whether or not he will be extending his stay in South Yorkshire or not.
