Sheffield Wednesday have received some positive news on the injury front as Michael Turner is nearing a comeback after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee problem.

The centre-back, on loan from Norwich City until the end of the season, has started running again, having missed the last six fixtures. His last outing came against his former club Hull City on October 17.

While Saturday’s Yorkshire derby tussle with Huddersfield Town will come too soon for Turner, head coach Carlos Carvalhal believes the defender, Marco Matias (hernia) and Barry Bannan (knee) will shortly be back in the first-team fold.

Speaking at a press briefing this afternoon, Carvalhal said: “Michael Turner has started running again so we believe that he, Marco [Matias] and Barry Bannan will be back very, very soon.”

Scotland international Bannan is expected to be out of action for a couple of weeks after hurting his knee in the loss away to Charlton Athletic before the two-week international break.

“Barry will miss this game but he will be back soon,” said Carvalhal. “He is improving very well so we will have him soon again.”

Keiren Westwood has shrugged off the ankle knock which forced him to withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad last week. Jack Hunt (knee) and Glenn Loovens (hamstring) are also available for selection.

Striker Lucas Joao and Daniel Pudil are expected to be involved after returning from international duty with Portugal and the Czech Republic unscathed today. The duo are poised to take part in training tomorrow.

Carvalhal is confident Wednesday will be able to cope without inspirational midfield duo Bannan and Sam Hutchinson.

“We will have changes because Sam and Barry are not in the squad,” he said. “But other players will come into the midfield. We have done that in the past, we have won without Barry and won without Sam, because we have other players in midfield with the quality to play.”
