'Lions' spotted at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium - but it's for a good cause
From golden elephants to lions...
‘Lions’ have been spotted near Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium - but there is no need to panic.
Pictures of a lorry carrying the covered, life-sized sculptures outside the ground sparked intrigue from Owls fans nearby on Thursday morning.
After former Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri previously installed two golden elephant statues in the entrance to the South Stand, some supporters saw the funny side as lions were now seemingly being delivered. But we are paws-itive that we have the answer to this small mystery.
The lions are part of the Pride of Yorkshire Sculpture Trail event, organised by Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, to celebrate 150 years of the charity. A total of 150 lions and lionesses will be located around the city, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster from June 8 until September 7.
The sculptures have been designed by professional artists and community groups and the fundraising campaign aims to raise vital funds to support the hospital’s next chapter of life-changing care.
Cheryl Davidson, of, Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “We want this to be our biggest and most impactful campaign yet, uniting the region in support of a cause that touches so many lives. The beauty of this campaign is that everyone can play a part. Whether it’s a company stepping forward as a sponsor, a school embracing the fundraising challenge, or a family exploring the trail. Together, we can make this a movement that has a lasting impact on children’s healthcare.”
And artist Tom Newell added: “The mane of the lion is hundreds of different angles, so I spent four days on that. It was a real patience-test!”
Everyone at The Star hopes the event is a roaring success.
