NEW Director of Performance Alex Armstrong will help raise standards at Sheffield Wednesday, according to manager Dave Jones.

Armstrong, who has previously worked with Jones at Southampton, Wolves and Cardiff, will oversee the fitness of the Owls’ first-team squad.

Armstrong was appointed on Friday and his arrival will also benefit academy fitness coach Carl Wells in the long run, says Jones. When Tom Little left to join Brian Laws at Burnley, it was Alan Irvine who promoted Wells.

“I’m trying to bring a more professional approach to what we are trying to do,” said Jones. “Alex has been with me a long time.

“He knows how I work and Carl can learn from him. All I’m trying to do is make it solid, professional and change it around.

“That’s going to take a bit of time but it is all about me stamping my authority.”

Jones described the supporters as “phenomenal” after their 2-1 win at Notts County.

“I’m pleased for them because we have been in the doldrums for such a long time,” he said. “They will get nervous but they have to trust and believe in what we are doing. Players will make mistakes but I want them to keep getting the ball.”
