Lee Gregory linked with Sheffield Wednesday? – Why it’s unlikely…
Sheffield Wednesday are yet to sign anybody ahead of the 2021/22 season just yet, with unpaid wages and a reported transfer embargo meaning that Darren Moore and his recruitment team are pretty hamstrung.
With the unpaid wages scenario especially, signing new players at this point in time is certainly a big ask for Moore, with the Owls a tough sell for any player until that issue is eventually finalised.
Reports elsewhere, however, have suggested that experienced striker, Lee Gregory, has made his way onto the Owls’ radar, with talk of them potentially leading the race for his signature, however it is thought that that is unlikely at this stage.
The 32-year-old forward, who really made a name for himself at Millwall after a dynamic spell with Halifax Town, spent the latter half of 2020/21 with Derby County, still has a year left on his Stoke City contract – another factor that would make a Hillsborough move unlikely given their financial situation.
While Gregory is a player that the Owls have considered in the past, it’s thought that a move to the Championship is more likely for Sheffield-born forward right now, with strong interest from England’s second tier as he draws closer to the final year of his deal in Stoke.
For Wednesday, Moore and his team are working hard behind the scenes as they try and plan as much as possible for a tough campaign in League One, and are seemingly going down more of a youthful route as they look at free transfers and loans as their main source of possible recruitment.
