The 19-year-old attacker started in the Owls under-23s defeat at Ipswich Town this afternoon alongside fellow trialist and former Wrexham prospect Callum Huxley, who once again impressed.

Making his first appearance for the club, Brown-Sterling started up top. The 19-year-old was most recently contracted at Bolton Wanderers, where he made four first-team appearances – including two league outings – as the cash-strapped club fielded a number of very young sides under Phil Parkinson at the start of last season.

Brown-Sterling was one of a handful of Bolton youngsters to be released back in May after the Trotters elected not to field an under-23 side as a cost-cutting measure.

The youngster is the latest in a string of prospects to have been trialled at Wednesday with Lee Bullen’s under-23 side.

So far only former Everton youngster Korede Adedoyin has been signed on a permanent basis after the likes of Marley Blair (ex-Liverpool and Burnley), Colin Odutayo (ex-Aston Villa), Okera Simmonds (ex-Liverpool and Blackburn) and Giovani McGregor (ex-Crystal Palace) were passed up on.

The Star were told last month that the club are operating a ‘door ajar’ policy with youngsters without a club, meaning that while they continue to be selective, opportunities are there for plyers to prove their worth.

Bullen said last month that while it is an interesting time, trialists have to work hard: “It’s very difficult for any trialist nowadays.

"With the club and their finances, we’ve got to be careful who we bring in.”
