Wednesday were unable to recover after shipping two goals in the opening eight minutes to Neil Harris’ Bluebirds side.

Tom Lees gave the Hillsborough faithful some hope in the 18th minute when he headed home Barry Bannan’s corner but there was to be no Christmas cheer as the Owls ended the year with two successive defeats.

Despite the reverse, Garry Monk’s side remain in the play-off places going into the New Year.

Here’s what you’ve been saying on Twitter after today’s game.

@adam7485 Write the season off, transition period to begin. Sell Winnall, Rhodes, Reach, Westwood and cash in on Iorfa for a good amount. Need to completely rebuild IMO. #swfc

@YesWeCrann A nightmare finish against Stoke and an equally nightmarish start against Cardiff has probably cost us six points in just a few days, but we’re somehow still in the playoffs. It’s even more depressing considering the results of those around us. Massive opportunity missed. #SWFC

@BroomOwl EFL won't mess about with points deduction after that - just leave us to punish ourselves #swfc

@Afoxich I can appreciate that sometimes things don’t always go to plan or work how you imagined. But more often than not I can see the thinking even when we lose. I have no clue what the plan was today? What tactics were those today? #SWFC

@OR19922 Absolutely the worst performance this season. Absolutely no ideas going forward. Beyond poor. In massive need of recruitment in Jan and getting rid of a few. Nowhere near top 6 at this rate. #swfc

@mrh1867 #SWFC disgraceful comedy defending cost us today. Palmer not even looking at the ball for the free kick and Lees not determined to stop attacker. Looked like they were full of Christmas spirit.

@Barx_SB Old guard had there chance. Times up. None of them fit enough and some not good enough anymore for top six. Keep Bannan and Fletch beyond that they can all go. Reach and Palmer first. This league is awful this year. How we are sixth is frightening. #SWFC
