Why Garry Monk wants to add to Sheffield Wednesday squad ahead of this week's Blackburn Rovers clash

Winnall’s work rate and determination leading the line on Saturday set the tone for a dogged defensive display that allowed Nuhiu to reap the rewards of a tired and frustrated second half performance from the hosts.

The big Kosovan, who replaced Winnall as the lone striker in the 69th minute, slid the ball through for Jacob Murphy to open the scoring with three minutes to go before sealing the win with a classy finish in the fourth minute of injury time.

But with top scorer Steven Fletcher out for at least two months and despite the ever-nearing return of Fernando Forestieri, Owls boss Monk reiterated the need to add firepower to his squad sooner rather than later.

And asked whether he was aiming to do so ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Blackburn Rovers, the 40-year-old said he was but admitted there may be obstacles in the way of achieving that goal.

He said: “Of course, I would like to bring someone in as soon as possible but it is not always as easy as that because it is not just you trying to get someone. There can be other factors like other clubs.

“But, of course, you want to try and get them in as early as possible so they can used to how we work and what you need from them and how they fit into the group.”

Wednesday will be most likely operating in the loan market and have been linked with a third temporary Hillsborough spell for Crystal Palace forward Connor Wickham, with Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah also more tentatively linked.

Asked what style of forward he’d prefer, Monk said: “We are looking at all types. They have to fit into the group that we have already got.

“With Fletch out, we need some strength and dynamic in the attacking areas.

“We are working on it but there is nothing concrete at the moment.”
