The winger made the admission after the Owls' stunning 2-0 win over promotion rivals Leeds United.

Murphy, on loan from Premier League Newcastle United until the end of the season, and substitute Atdhe Nuhiu registered late on at Elland Road to ensure Garry Monk's men claimed the local bragging rights.

Victory over the Whites moved Wednesday back into the play-off positions.

Murphy told The Star: "We know we are on a journey to hopefully doing something special this season.

"That’s the view from everyone in the dressing room. We just have to keep being relentless, keep showing fight and hopefully we can do something special."

Three defeats on the spin over the Christmas and New Year period dampened spirits at Hillsborough and threatened to undermine the club's top-six charge.

Monk held clear the air talks with his squad after their home defeat to Hull City and his players have since responded by recording back-to-back away wins and clean sheets.

"I wouldn’t say it was home truths but sometimes a rocket up the backside is the right thing to do to try to turn the corner," acknowledged Murphy.

"It has been a good week for us but we are not going to get ahead of ourselves. We have a massive game next week and we want to put some more points on the board."

Wednesday, who entertain mid-table Blackburn Rovers next Saturday, currently trail second-placed Leeds United by 10 points with 19 matches left to go.

When asked about a late top-two push, Murphy said: "Why not? It is there for anyone.

"Who wants it the most? As long as we are there in the promotion race, that’s all anyone can ask for. But why not the top two?

“It’s about experience. We’ve got tons of experience, tons of league games in the squad. The boys have that bouncebackability that is going to put us in good stead for the rest of the season.”
