The result lifted the Owls up to seventh, level on points with sixth-placed Cardiff City, who they take on next weekend, and stretched their unbeaten home run to eight matches.

Head coach Carvalhal says he is “proud” of the progress they have made since his appointment in June but insists they have plenty of ground to make up on teams such as Derby.

“After five months of work, the way we are playing is fantastic,” he stressed. “But Derby have come very close to getting promoted in the last two seasons.

“They are a strong side and their players know each other. They have a team who sometimes play with their eyes closed.

“We are in a completely different position. We are in the process. We brought in 16 players, a new coach and a new style of play. We should be happy and proud but we still think we can do better.”

Carvalhal, who claimed they dropped two points yesterday, said: “We are playing at Hillsborough in front of our massive fans so we play with 12 players all the time. It is more difficult for the opponents because we have a fantastic environment.”

We are approaching the half-way point in the season, but Carvalhal is refusing to get carried away despite their lofty league position.

He said: “It is not important where we are in the table now. We are in December. We must improve.”

Derby boss Paul Clement argued a draw was a fair result, bemoaning their lack of creativity in the final third.

“This is a difficult place to come,” he added. “They [Wednesday] have a good home record and I hope it will be a valuable point come the end of the season.”
