Eighth-placed Wednesday have played six of their fellow top ten sides so far this season without winning a game.

But head coach Carvalhal believes the improvement of his side over the campaign means they are in a position to change their record against the Championship’s top sides this weekend.

“I think with the time we have had we are ready and we are better,” Carvalhal told The Star.

“We are a team in process and we are a team that is building – building from zero.

“In this way, it is not easy to play against the top teams.

“I still think we can do better and I hope we try to do better on Sunday.

“Even if we don’t do better on Sunday, we are ready to do better in the future.

“We are ready for the strong games.”

Other than in the defeat to Middlesbrough in August, the Owls have been competitive in all their games with the division’s leading clubs including picking up draws with table-topping Brighton and Hove Albion, Hull City and Reading.

And Carvalhal says they have shown they can match the best sides.

He said: “All the time that we have played against them, we have given them a lot of problems in a lot of games.

“It was just Middlesbrough. It was very difficult to go to 1-1 but after we had a fantastic reaction. But we lost the ball, they got the second goal and killed the game.

“In other games we matched them. In Burnley we lost but probably did one of our best games of the season.

“In Ipswich we did fantastic, in Hull City we played very well and also Brighton.”
