More than 2,600 Wednesdayites roared on the Owls in Saturday's morale-boosting win at injury-hit Charlton Athletic. It was their first victory in six matches and the result lifted the doom and gloom threatening to engulf the Championship club.

Monk told The Star: "The players are working hard to give the fans success.

"We want to give them a team they can be proud of. We are trying to do that and we are very close to it.

"They spent their hard earned money to come to London and we have tried to give them something in every game."

Wednesday look well-placed to mount a promotion push. They have suffered just three league defeats since Monk's appointment in early-September and are within touching distance of the top-six contenders.

He said: "We are a work in progress but there is a demand to win every single game. I understand that and so do the players.

"I was really pleased with the strength of character after a tricky period of results. We got exactly what we deserved at Charlton.

"But it is only one game and we have to build on it in the coming games."

Next up for the Owls is a tough-looking home assignment with Brentford. The seventh-placed Bees head to S6 full of confidence after winning six of their last eight fixtures, including a 7-0 thumping of relegation-threatened Luton Town last week.

Meanwhile, ex-Sheffield Wednesday midfielder David Jones made a losing start to his Oldham Athletic career.

Jones, released by the Owls at the end of last season, was an unused substitute in the Latics 1-0 defeat to Burton Albion in the FA Cup second round.

The 35-year-old, who made just two appearances for the Owls during the 2018/19 season, signed a short-term deal with the League Two club after impressing during a trial spell last week.

Jones is expected to be included in Oldham’s squad when they entertain Leyton Orient on Saturday.
