The former Hull City favourite was told he will not be offered a contract extension by Newcastle United.

Diame was released by the Magpies earlier this week, bringing an end to his three year stay at the club after joining from Hull.

Steve Bruce worked with the midfielder during his time as manager at City and the Owls are now reportedly interested in bringing him to Hillsborough, according to HITC.

"Mo has been a great servant to Newcastle United in his three years here,” said manager Rafa Benitez. “He has given us a lot on and off the pitch and we wish him well for the future.”

Diame turns 32 next week and made more than 100 appearances for Newcastle United.

He also broke Sheffield Wednesday hearts by scoring the winning goal at Wembley in the 2016 Championship play-off final.

Elsewhere, Owls fans are convinced Keiren Westwood is set to extend his stay at Hillsborough, judging by his latest tweet.

The 34-year-old, who was ignored under manager Jos Luhukay, kept 11 clean sheets in 21 appearances under Steve Bruce.

His current deal is set to expire at the end of the month and journalist Alan Nixon has reported there are ‘very positive signs’ over a new deal.

Westwood also revealed in a tweet that his son now has now signed with the Owls’ under-6 side.

This could mean a longer-term stay for the Wednesday star.
