Fletcher's 58th-minute penalty cancelled out Hal Robson-Kanu's opener and appeared to salvage a deserved point for the Owls.

But with two minutes remaining, substitute Charlie Austin converted home from 12 yards after Keiren Westwood had brought down Matheus Pereira in the penalty area to secure leaders a 10th win of the season.

Fletcher told The Star: "I think they were the better team in the opening 15 minutes and then we got ourselves together.

"I thought we played some decent football, especially in the attacking third.

"We switched off in the last 10 minutes again. Individual mistakes cost us and it was a kick in the teeth really because we got back on level terms.

"It would have been a good point if we had hung on but yet again we let one in in the last five to 10 minutes so it was disappointing."

Wednesday have dropped to ninth in the table after four matches without a win. Late goals in each of the last three outings with Blackburn Rovers, Swansea City and WBA has cost them six points.

"I don't think you can put it (the late goals) down to one thing," said Fletcher. "It is individual errors and it has been different people in games.

"If we can cut them out, we will pick up points because we are playing some good football. We are playing on the front foot and we have got some exciting players.

"We have got two more games this week, which is good for us in my opinion. It will be good to get back out there and play again rather than be on the training pitch for another week."

Monk's side return to action on Wednesday evening when they host his former club Birmingham City.

"The gaffer will get us back in and we will discuss the individual mistakes," said Fletcher, who leads the way in the goal-scoring charts for the Owls with six this campaign. "I think it is always good to talk over the mistakes you make and we will do that but we then have to put it to the back of our minds because we have another big game on Wednesday."
