Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly in a three horse race for out of contract Middlesbrough midfielder Stewart Downing.

Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie claims that the Owls, Blackburn and Rangers are all interested in signing the 34-year-old, who has left the Riverside on a free transfer.

The former England international has reportedly caught the eye of former Liverpool team mate and Rangers manager Steven Gerrard but could be a valuable addition for Championship clubs looking for an experienced midfielder.

Wednesday are known to be in the market for free agents and low cost signings, but manager Steve Bruce has said he wants to bring young, fresh legs to his squad.

A move for Downing would be a surprising departure from that policy, although the former Aston Villa man brings plenty of knowledge of playing in the Premier League which will be the Owls’ target next season.
