Cattermole, 31, is a free agent after leaving the Black Cats earlier this week after 10 years, setting off rumours of a possible link-up with his former manager Steve Bruce.

Wednesday had been rumoured to have been interested in the midfielder battler last month and with Bruce admitting his interest in strengthening in the middle of the park, many believed Hillsborough would be a potential destination.

But The Star understands the club are not in for Cattermole, who earlier this year expressed a desire to play abroad.

Former Sunderland skipper Lee Cattermole had been linked with a move to Sheffield Wednesday.
