Sheffield Wednesday: Matias tipped to flourish

Wednesday midfielder Jose Semedo is backing Marco Matias to silence his critics in the second half of their Championship campaign.

Matias has struggled to justify his big money move from Nacional, hitting just two goals in 11 Owls appearances.

The 26-year-old forward, a £1.14m recruit, has been out of action since September 26 due to a hernia problem. He jetted out to see a highly-regarded surgeon in Germany six weeks ago and underwent surgery.

It is believed Matias is now on the mend and Semedo is backing his countryman to impress as soon as he regains full fitness.

The Portuguese ace told The Star: “We have seen glimpses of what Marco can do in the Leeds and Middlesbrough games.

“Marco is a real star. He has goals in him. He scored 17 in the Portuguese top-flight last season so I have no doubts whatsoever he can do well here.

“When Marco recovers from his problem, he will shine just like Lucas Joao has for us. He will be like a new signing.

“The fans will love Marco as much as they love Lucas because he is a very good player. They have great knowledge and played well together at Nacional. They combine well and the fans will be happy to see them play together.

“The good thing is that the atmosphere in the dressing room has helped both Marco and Lucas settle in very quickly. We have a good bunch of lads.

“That’s what has made a big difference to Marco, Lucas and the coaching staff who are Portuguese.

“We are one big family and that makes them more comfortable.”
