Sheffield Wednesday: Maghoma braced for Owls reunion

Sheffield Wednesday will see a familiar face when they line up against top-six rivals Birmingham City on Boxing Day.

Jacques Maghoma, one of 11 players released by the Owls last summer, could start for the Blues in their 4-2-3-1 formation. The forward will be competing with highly-rated teenager Demarai Gray and former Doncaster Rovers star David Cotterill for a wing spot.

For one reason or another, Maghoma failed to hit top form at Hillsborough, notching just four goals in 66 outings for the Owls.

His inconsistent performances even led to Owls legend Carlton Palmer once questioning the Democratic Republic of Congo international’s application. Palmer described the forward as “lazy”, a tag which Maghoma felt was unjust.

Although Maghoma made a promising start to the 2014/15 campaign, he was unable to silence the vast majority of his critics.

After being shown the door by Wednesday, Maghoma headed to Birmingham, penning a two-year deal, with the option of a further year.

The 28-year-old has repaid the faith Blue boss Gary Rowett, who he also worked with at Burton Albion, has shown in him, producing a string of eye-catching displays in the club’s play-off push. He has featured prominently, making 24 appearances, hitting three goals.

While it remains unclear whether Maghoma will start, Birmingham are boosted by the news that captain Paul Robinson and striker Clayton Donaldson have shaken off their injury problems.
