The Sunderland winger spent three months at Wednesday under Carlos Carvalhal in the 2015-16 season, scoring one goal in 13 appearances during a disappointing temporary spell from Everton.

Now reports in the North East suggest Wednesday are among several clubs interested in signing the 33-year-old Republic of Ireland man.

McGeady has been told he can leave the Black Cats this month and has been training with the under 23s since being informed he has no future with the club.

He still has 18 months left on his contract but the Sunderland Echo is reporting the club is confident McGeady will move on.

Speaking last month, Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson said: “There’s nothing absolutely concrete but I’m sure that in a situation like this, quite often the player’s agent will be working on several situations.”
