Sheffield Wednesday: Kids bid to cause cup upset

The Owls’ Under-18s lock horns with Swansea City, who are a Category One side and reached the fifth round of the tournament last year, at Llanelli’s Stebonheath Park this afternoon, kick-off 1pm.

Wednesday’s team, featuring promising midfielder Matt Penney and striker George Hirst, the son of Owls legend David, head into the tie low on confidence, having lost their last three league fixtures.

Steve Haslam’s Category Two side bowed out at the first hurdle of the competition in 2014, slipping to a comprehensive 5-0 defeat against Stoke City at Hillsborough. Four of the Potters five goals came in 21 first half minutes.

Eric Ramsay, the Swans U18s coach, said: “The game has come at a good time and we are really excited.

“We go into the game off the back of some really good performances in both the league and FAW Youth Cup.

“We had a good run in the competition this time last season with wins over Watford and Doncaster and that is something we are keen to repeat this year.

“The side has come a long way since the start of the season but we still have hard work to do to continue our development. We want to continue our winning run and be in the hat for the next round.”
