Steven Fletcher bagged a double and Atdhe Nuhiu registered to seal the Owls’ first away win since September.

Owls writer Dom Howson identifies four talking points from the Championship tussle.

Attacking line-up pays dividends

Eyebrows were raised over the team selection as Monk ditched one up front and reverted to a 4-4-2 formation.

It was a signal of intent to bring in forwards Fernando Forestieri and Atdhe Nuhiu to beef up their attacking options. Their presence lightened the load on Steven Fletcher and Monk was rewarded for a more offensive line up with three goals and three points.

Captain fantastic

Tom Lees was rock solid in defence alongside Dominic Iorfa. He put in a commanding performance on his return to the team, making a number of important headers and clearances when Charlton occasionally threatened after the break.

Lees’ strong showing gives Monk a welcome selection dilemma. Julian Börner will be available for selection when they return to action at home to Brentford next week after completing a one-match suspension. Will Monk keep faith with the back four he fielded at The Valley or hand an immediate first-team recall to Börner?

Fernando Forestieri's eventful afternoon

Wednesdayites finally got their wish as Monk handed Forestieri his first league since in almost three months.

Forestieri delivered an energetic performance on the left hand side of midfield in Monk's 4-4-2 formation. Not only did he track back and stick well to his defensive duties to aid Morgan Fox, but he was a good attacking outlet.

But Forestieri spurned a wonderful, gilt-edged chance to put the Owls two nil ahead in the 24th minute. He inexplicably blazed high and wide from just a few yards out after Dillon Phillips kept out Steven Fletcher's header.

It could have been a costly miss.

Wednesday still have a long way to go

This morale-boosting win has lifted the doom and gloom around S6. Victory keeps them within touching distance of the play-offs.

But they must sharpen up at both ends of the pitch to fulfil their potential.
