Sheffield Wednesday: Garry Monk frustrated at 'individual mistakes' after more late heartbreak at West Brom

Full-back Liam Palmer failed to clear his lines with Baggies livewire Matheus Pereira onrushing, leaving goalkeeper Keiren Westwood unable to avoid contact with the Brazilian. Charlie Austin scored the resultant spot kick.

It is the third consecutive game that has seen the Owls drop points in the last moments of matches having had periods of domination and a visibly disappointed Monk maintained that it is those individual errors – not team performances – that is costing them dear.

“I feel sick for the players, to come to the league leaders and play that well,” he said.

“The first half was quite even but in the second half we were the best team on the pitch. To create that amount of chances and not win that game, that’s three games in a row, not not take any points from it is quite astounding.

“Everything in terms of the performance is there. The main parts, being ruthless and clinical, there were chances there to kill that game and unfortunately we conceded that poor goal at the end. That’s three games in a row, we’ve discussed it and we know we can’t continue in that way.

“So much of that game is exactly what we needed it to be.”

Centre-half Julian Borner was at fault for the first goal, stepping out of position to leave West Brom forward Hal Robson-Kanu a clean run at goal to open the scoring after 10 minutes.

Monk was clear that while the feeling of deja vu may prompt questions about game management and mentality, it is those key moments that are to blame. It is only themselves, he said, that they can blame.

“In those split moments we’ve made the mistake and been punished heavily for it,” he said.

“It’s about not cutting out those individual mistakes which is more like it, rather than game management, we have to continue to work to get that right and that’s what we’ll do.

“It’s not about taking responsibility, it’s cutting mistakes, simple as that. Unfortunately we’re human beings, we make mistakes, some in a short period of time. It is what it is.

“It’s got nothing to do with tactics or anything, the performance was exactly what it should be, it was a near-on perfect performance but there were two things – we weren’t clinical enough and we made a mistake.”
