Sheffield Wednesday: Double injury blow for Owls

Sheffield Wednesday’s recent misfortune with injuries has continued as Michael Turner and Alex Lopez are set for further spells on the sidelines.

Defender Turner suffered a recurrence of his knee problem in the midweek loss at MK Dons while Lopez was taken off after tearing his quad muscle. The duo had only recently returned to action following lengthy lay-offs.

Due to Wednesday’s centre-half shortage, Turner was asked to play twice in the space of four days following two months on the sidelines.

On Turner’s knock, head coach Carlos Carvalhal said: “Michael was not 100 per cent. He played with some problems. He had an injury but we couldn’t substitute more players. It is my reponsibility because he hasn’t played for a long time.”

With Turner and Lopez poised to miss Sunday’s key Hillsborough encounter with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Carvalhal will be hoping versatile Owls star Sam Hutchinson shakes off his back niggle to fill in again at centre-back. Wednesday have few other viable alternatives as Vincent Sasso (knee) and Tom Lees (hamstring) continue to receive treatment.

Jack Hunt, meanwhile, has apologised to Owls fans after their “embarrassing” display against the Dons. The full-back has called on the team to “stick together” and bounce back this weekend.
