Meire only moved to Hillsborough on New Year's Day in 2018 - just days after quitting her job as CEO and director of Charlton Athletic.

In a statement on Wednesday’s website, Meire said: “Since joining Sheffield Wednesday in January 2018, I felt a warm welcome from everyone at the club and the fans at games and around the city.

“I would like to wish the chairman, the staff and players at the club all the very best. With new manager Steve Bruce in charge and the fantastic support of our amazing fans, the club’s journey to the Premier League has never looked any better.”

Eyebrows were raised when the Owls hired Meire. Along with owner Roland Duchatelet, she was an unpopular figure during a four-year stint at Charlton. Meire, a Football Association council member, and Duchatelet were the target of protests from fans unhappy with how the club was being run during her time at The Valley.

She was reponsible for the day-to-day running of Wednesday and worked closely on the academy side, playing a key role in the Owls tying down a number of their younger players to new contracts.

Meire, a lawyer by trade, also focused her energy on trying to improve the supporters experience on match-days. The club have trialled a fan zone at Hillsborough.

"We want to get fans to come to the club not just for the football," she said.

Wednesday also opened up a pop-up store at Meadowhall over the Christmas period.

The club’s statement added: “Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank Katrien for her passion and dedication to the club and wish her the very best for the future.”
