Hooper, on loan from Norwich City until January 17, has struggled to impress since moving to Hillsborough.

But the striker climbed off the bench to register his maiden Wednesday goal in Tuesday’s reversal at MK Dons.

Carvalhal said: “Gary is a goal-scorer. We didn’t have many chances at MK but he scored. It’s very important for his motivation and confidence.”

Hooper, who has scored goals in each of the top six divisions of English football, from the Premier League to the level now known as National League South, is looking to kick on after opening his account.

“It was important for me to get off the mark,” said the 27-year-old. “I want to score goals; that’s what I’ve been brought here for.

“We started to come on stronger in the second half and it was a nice assist from Ross Wallace. I took my first goal well but it wasn’t enough. We lost the game and we have to move on.”
