Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk responds to loan links to highly-rated Premier League pair Rhian Brewster and Eddie Nketiah

After admitting a need to add firepower to his Sheffield Wednesday squad ahead of the January transfer window, Owls boss Garry Monk refused to rule the club out of deals for Premier League youngsters Rhian Brewster and Eddie Nketiah.

But the 40-year-old admitted players of their calibre are difficult to nail down and that the club are likely to face huge competition for either signature.

Monk, who’s side sit sixth in the Championship, has made it clear that he would like to add attacking players to his side’s promotion push and that the club are likely only to be able to operate in the loan market.

Asked by The Star about the talented duo he said: “The more talented players, you’re always going to be linked with players, you’re always going to have players touted.

“The more high calibre, the more difficult it is. But we need to keep pushing for those and having discussions.

“Those discussions are going on and we do have certain targets. We’ll try and push for that.”

Liverpool’s Brewster, 19, has been on the fringes of the first team of the European champions but has found it difficult to break in despite suggestions from Jurgen Klopp at the start of the season that he would be integrated.

Swansea City, managed by his former England under-17 manager Steve Cooper, is listed as the most likely destination.

While Nketiah, 20, is expected to be recalled from Leeds United and loaned out once by owner club Arsenal, who are unhappy at the amount of pitch time he has been offered by Marcelo Bielsa. Bristol City are reportedly closest to his signature.

“When you’re working in the loans market the higher calibre players are very difficult to get,” Monk said.

“You’re competing against a lot of teams, you’re competing against teams with maybe more capabilities in terms of what they can do financially and things like that.

“All I can say is that we’re trying to find and trying to push for as good a player as we are trying to get.

“The key is to try and find players that can compliment what we’ve already got.”
