Sam ponders move to Owls

READING centre half Sam Sodje is expected to give his answer to Owls boss Brian Laws within 24 hours on a transfer that could cost £350,000.

The 28-year-old Nigerian international had talks with Wednesday and watched the game against Wolves. He has to decide whether to swap the Premiership for first-team football in the Championship.

Sodje, brother of former Sheffield Eagles rugby league player Bright Sodje, has fallen down the pecking order at Reading and manager Steve Coppell is prepared to let him go for a fee similar to the 350,000 he paid Brentford for the defender last summer.

Brian Laws wants to bolster a defence that has conceded seven goals in the first two League games. He dropped Lee Bullen and Peter Gilbert after the opening-day defeat at Ipswich but recalled Bullen for the Wolves match as Steve Watson was ruled out by a stomach strain.

Sodje began his career at Stevenage and moved to non-League Margate. Brentford signed him on a free in 2004, and after two years he joined Reading last summer.

He made only four first-team starts plus three appearances as sub. The highlight of his season was a headed goal in Reading's 3-2 FA Cup win over Burnley.
