Pay day for Jay-jay, but he's earning his £15,000 a week with Hull

HULL City's signing of former Bolton star Jay-Jay Okocha came at a price but has seized the imagination of Tigers supporters and lifted the team.

City are said to be paying the 34-year-old Nigeria international 15,000 a week.

It is an outlay beyond the means of many Championship clubs, including, no doubt, the Owls, and it may have looked a gamble when he was hired just before last month's transfer deadline after playing for a year for Qatar Sports Club.

He had been out of English football since he left Bolton under freedom of contract in 2006.

But he was widely credited as being the inspiration behind Hull's shock 1-0 win on Tuesday when he made his full debut at Wolves, and is a man to watch when his team visit Hillsborough tomorrow.

"He's a quality player; he's made an impact," says Owls boss Brian Laws.

"We have to be alert and not give away silly free-kicks around the box because he can be deadly with those."

Okocha was so good at Molineux that he was applauded by Wolves fans as well as his own when he was taken off near the end.

Before that, such was his reputation that when he was being warmed up with a reserves outing at Scunthorpe, hundreds of Hull fans travelled to see him play.

He wears number 44 - and so many Hull fans bought replica shirts that at one point the club shop ran out of number fours!

Okocha, also a former World Cup star, made his debut at Molineux in a free role behind a lone front man.

He is hungry for the ball, has a repertoire of tricks and vision, and is difficult to dispossess.

It is a combination that made him a cult hero at Bolton and has impressed his new teammates.

Hull midfield man Bryan Hughes says: "He's got such quick feet that it's difficult to know what he's going to do next.

"He's a very big talent and it's nice to get the chance to play alongside someone who's achieved so much.

"I'd rather play alongside him than against him because we've already seen he's such a handful to mark.

"He's the type of player who can make us tick, and his play in the final third can help us really get our season up and running."

Okocha played his first game for Hull in a private reserve game against the Owls on Humberside.

It is said that he did not stand out in the match, but since then the Tigers will have been working on his match fitness and on integrating him into the team.

Manager Phil Brown has hailed his performance and that of the whole team after the fine result at Wolves, which was apparently based on sound defending as well as Okocha's flair.

Brown says: "I thought the back four defended valiantly and the goalkeeper deserved his clean sheet with a great save in the first half.

Wolves threw everything at us and I was pleased with our mentality."

On the impact of Okocha, he says: "It's going to be a learning curve for everybody; all of a sudden, a player of his stature comes to the club.

"No disrespect to the players at the club, but they'll not have sampled someone with the qualities of the man or the player.

"He showed flashes of quality and flashes of simplicity. I think his qualities came through, but I don’t want to single anyone out; it was a great team performance.

“A win like that kick-starts your belief system. It kick-starts your confidence and it kick-starts your season.

“Belief is getting there and the squad is looking strong - that showed.

“It was a job well done, and we’re that kind of a team where confidence matters.”

Hull are likely to field much the same side that played at Wolves but have a doubt about record signing Caleb Folan.

Ex-Spireite Folan limped off on Tuesday. His replacement, Dean Windass, scored with a penalty then went off himself, with a calf knock, but it appears that he could be fit for tomorrow.
