Owls striker's learning curve

LEON Clarke's loan move to Southend can give the Sheffield Wednesday striker regular League football and help him to discover scoring form, believes Owls boss Brian Laws.

Clarke made a pre-deadline move to the League One club last night and will stay with them until the end of December.

The deal came after Laws signed striker Akpo Sodje and winger Etienne Esajas and had warned that players would have to leave Hillsborough on loan or permanently to make way for new players.

Laws had aimed to sign a centre-half on a short-term loan though he was unable to land a suitable one before the window for full deals and long-term loans closed last night.

Reflecting on Clarke's departure, the Owls boss said: "I've got to move people around so I can make room for players coming in.

"Leon has done a lot better this year and has worked on his fitness, but he needs a run of games, which I can't give him at the moment.’’
