The Bluebirds occupy the final Championship play-off position but they are above the seventh-placed Owls on goal difference.

Slade, who rose to prominence in the coaching circles during the late 90s at Sheffield United, is convinced his Cardiff side possess the strength in depth required to challenge for promotion.

Speaking at his press briefing today, he said: “We wanted top six. That’s our mandate.

“We are just about on course. We’d like to put some daylight there. That makes Sheffield Wednesday a defining game. We are playing some teams around us, it’s a critical period now.”

Slade, who has confirmed defender Matt Connolly (back) is an injury concern, added: “Only winning games and performances will tell us if we are going to get there. We are in a decent position, but we can still improve and there’s work to be done. With a fair wind and a bit of business in January we can keep this going.”
