Garry Monk's troops were second best in the opening 45 minutes as the Whites wasted a string of opportunities to take the lead.

But the Owls showed more attacking intent in the second half and condemned their West Yorkshire neighbours to a first home defeat since August after late strikes by Murphy and substitute Atdhe Nuhiu.

Murphy told The Star: "It is a massive result.

"A lot of teams know that Sheffield Wednesday is a tough team to play against. I think against Leeds we emphasised that and hopefully we can take it into the fixtures coming up.”

The Newcastle United loanee was a big threat on the right wing with his pace and trickery and he capped an eye-catching display with his third goal of the season."I have been waiting a number of games to get back on the scoresheet and I’m really happy that I did it in such a massive game and a derby like this," said Murphy.

"I think I have been putting in good performances but the stats haven’t been there.

"It might have looked like I haven’t been doing as well as I have done. That’s what we are judged on as forwards but I’m happy with what I’m doing, I’ve just got to put more stats on the board."

Asked if it is frustrating that footballers are often judged on numbers, Murphy said: "It is the modern day game.

"Wingers, forwards, they are judged on what they create, goals and assists so I know it is part and parcel.”

Murphy hopes he has done enough in the back-to-back victories over Brighton and Hove Albion and Leeds United to keep his place in the side.

"Every time I go out on the pitch I give my all," he said. "It is down to the manager to make the decision who starts.

"Kads [Kadeem Harris] and Reachy [Adam Reach] have been really good this season. Together, us wingers can do a lot of damage in this league so I am just going to get plugging away."
