Loan star tips Owls to start climbing table

The Owls new midfield player feels that the win will give the team the confidence to play cohesive football and banish the tension that blighted their first six games of the season.

It was more of a battling performance by the Owls than a full return to their attractive best in the result that may have turned their campaign. But Kavanagh feels that the team can now go on from there.

"If we perform like we did against Hull we can certainly go up the table," said Kavanagh.

"I think that everybody would agree there wasn't that much quality in the game.

"But I have been in this situation when I was at Stoke. When you're at the bottom, it doesn't matter you get results, so long as you get them, but when you do get that first win, it give you extra confidence."

The 33-year-ideally wants to break into the Premiership line-up back at Sunderland but would be interested in extending his Hillsborough loan or joining Wednesday on a full deal if it emerges that there is no first-team future for him at the Stadium of Light.

And he is determined to aid the Owls' cause.

"I could have sat in the reserves at Sunderland. Would I have been happy? No. The only way you feel like a footballer is to play on a Saturday and give your all, win or lose.

"Ideally I'd like to go back to and get back in the Premiership. If I was told over the next few weeks that situation wasn't going to emerge, certainly I'd be looking to move, and if that was the case, there's no reason why I wouldn't be interested the situation at a huge club like this."

Kavanagh lived up his reputation as a capable player with leadership qualities in the Hull game but is still building up his match fitness after coming back from a knee injury.

Fellow loan signing Michael Johnson has declared a firm wish to stay at Hillsborough.

Manager Brian Laws is likely to assess both players and the club's needs over the next few weeks before deciding on the next step.
