Laws steps up bid to extend Kavanagh loan

BRIAN Laws has given Sheffield Wednesday followers reassurance that he will attempt to extend Graham Kavanagh's loan spell at Hillsborough.

The Owls manager has confirmed his intention to speak to Roy Keane, boss of Kavanagh's club Sunderland, over the experienced midfielder staying in a blue and white shirt.

He has been with the Owls for a month and it expires after the game on Saturday at Stoke - one of Kavanagh's former clubs.

"I intend speaking to Roy Keane about it in the hope we can secure an extension of the loan," said Laws.

Some doubt had been cast over an extension when Laws said last week that falling income from lower gates could affect Wednesday's ability to bring in players or extend loans.

However, Laws' intention to speak to Keane indicates the desire to retain Kavanagh and that desire is also likely to extend to defender Michael Johnson when his first month on loan from Derby expires next week.

Keane was happy for Kavanagh to go out on loan so as to speed up his return to full match fitness after failing to figure in Sunderland's Premiership return.

However, Keane has not deemed him entirely surplus to his requirements and Sunderland currently have a midfield injury crisis with three players out.

But if he cannot get a regular place, then Kavanagh, 33, may have to consider a permanent departure come January so as to get first team football.

"The gaffer (Keane) said I needed games and I knew myself I did," said Kavanagh. "Hopefully, it was to get fit and get back in the team at Sunderland. But if that doesn't happen then so be it and I'd have to start looking at my options and see what's available."

He said he was enjoying playing and being involved at Wednesday... "it's a huge club and shouldn't be in the position it is in," said the former Republic of Ireland international.
