Jeffers back as Dutch winger shines for Owls

FRANCIS Jeffers returned to action for Sheffield Wednesday last night whilst two goals from new Dutch winger Etienne Esajas gave manager Brian Laws food for thought.

Jeffers, out since August 19 with a calf strain, played for 45 minutes of the reserves 5-1 win over Grimsby Town at Blundell Park last night.

He partnered Akpo Sodje in a front line partnership that Laws will be considering pitching into first team action soon, possibly even with thoughts on Saturday's trip to Preston.

Sodje also played for the first half last night although neither were on target.

Another boost for Wednesday was the return of Wade Small - and he marked it with a goal.

Esajas, with a superb solo effort, put Wednesday into the lead and Small made it 2-0 before going off after an hour's workout.

Youngsters Luke Boden and Jason Bradley (substitutes for Jeffers and Sodje) were on the mark in the second half before Esajas rounded off the scoring with Wednesday's fifth goal.

Laws sent out a strong side which also included Peter Gilbert, Kenny Lunt, Richard Hinds and Yoann Folly.

Former Wednesday goalkeeper David Lucas, who had a spell at Barnsley last season, has joined Leeds United.

He played in goal in a private friendly against Chesterfield yesterday.

He has signed a short-term deal with the Elland Road club.
