Iwelumo has Owls in his sights for repeat

NEW Charlton striker Chris Iwelumo is praying that Wednesday give him a helping hand once again as he tries to get his Valley career under way.The 29-year-old took advantage of a leaky Owls defence last season when he scored one of the goals in Colchester's 4-0 victory against Paul Sturrock's side.

That was part of an 18-goal haul that helped the much-travelled centre forward land a move to Charlton in the summer.

But after quitting Layer Road under freedom of contract he has yet to establish himself in Alan Curbushley's starting line-up and hopes for a chance when Wednesday - who have conceded seven goals in their first two Championship games - are the visitors on Saturday.

"First and foremost I want to get into the starting XI," he said. "I came here to play and the standard of football is fantastic - it's probably the highest that I've ever played at.

"It's fantastic when you come into training and see the guys you're playing with but I know I really need to bring my 'A' game if I'm going to get into the team.

"The gaffer has brought me here for a reason. It's a long season and we have five or six strikers at the club who can all do a job.

"Every one of us has our strengths and weaknesses and there are different combinations that will work in certain matches, so hopefully I will figure soon and can show what I can do.

"There's a great team spirit here and I've got to say that I've been very lucky because I've always walked into a fantastic dressing room wherever I've played. All the ingredients are there for a fantastic season ahead."

He had hoped to play against his former club Stoke last week but got into the action only as a sub. Now he has the Owls in his sights as Charlton - widely fancied to be among the promotion contenders - seek their first League win on the season

While Wednesday and other clubs have been involved in takeover talk this summer, Charlton too are the subject of rumours.

They are said to have attracted interest from foreign investors, including a Nigerian and Russian, and to have employed a specialist firm to analyse possible funding options, including a share issue.

The Valley's London setting is believed to be an attraction to possible buyers.
