"He's a big lump": Leeds United defender Ben White on Atdhe Nuhiu and why the Whites lost out to Sheffield Wednesday

Leeds United failed to raise their game for the visit of Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday partly because the visitors are ‘not a big side’, according to Whites defender Ben White.

The on-loan Brighton man was powerless in watching the Owls net two late goals at Elland Road to take the three points, a result that extended Garry Monk’s record over Marcelo Bielsa to three wins and a draw.

And White, 22, also commented on the impact of match-turning substitute Atdhe Nuhiu, describing the 6ft5 Kosovan as a ‘big lump’.

Leeds went into the match off the back of plaudits for their performance in a 1-0 FA Cup third round defeat at Premier League Arsenal.

Asked about whether the then-table-toppers deserved more from Saturday’s defeat, the youngster told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “Yes, especially in the first half.

“I think we should have scored a couple of goals and then the game goes differently.

“But we didn’t and they did in the second half.

“I think we played well in the first half. I think we deserved to get something from the game on our first half display.

“Obviously we did well against Arsenal and we have played like that before against a Championship side but it’s not as big because it’s not against a big side. We will just keep going.”

Coming off the bench with 20 minutes remaining Nuhiu disrupted the Leeds defence and produced a deft first-time pass to Jacob Murphy to open the scoring on 87 minutes.

His run and finish for their match-settling second, in the fourth minute of injury time, was his fourth of the season across all competitions. All four have arrived from the 8fth minute onwards.

“He’s a big lump isn’t he?” said White.

“It’s difficult to play against but it’s part of what they were going to do.

“They were obviously going to bring him on if they were nil nil and we should have been ready for that.”

The result took Wednesday back into the play-off places and reduced Leeds’ lead over third-placed Brentford to six points.
