Grant cements No1 spot in mini-revival

LEE Grant is in the firing line when the Owls face an away game tonight against a top-of-the-table Watford side who are eager to atone for a slip up three days ago.

But there is nothing like two consecutive clean sheets to give a keeper a lift.

It is also the first time in six and a half years that Wednesday have won 1-0 in two League games on the bounce.

The Owls' mini-revival has helped to confirm the No 1 spot for Grant after his early-season battle with Rob Burch for the jersey – and the ex-Derby man played his part in the victory at Norwich with an important second-half save.

Grant said: "I'm glad to be in the side and getting a run of games; I'm enjoying my football.

"The results have picked up, and when you keep clean sheets it gives you that bit of confidence.

"The lads kept Norwich pretty quiet – I didn't have a lot to do

"It was my aim to stamp my authority on the No 1 spot as soon as possible. I'm doing that now, and hopefully it will continue.

"Now we've got our first points and got that monkey off our backs, it's breathed a bit of confidence into the whole place."

Manager Brian Laws said: "Lee can only benefit from two clean sheets. He's part of the defence, and they all take credit for that."

An unhappy Watford boss Adrian Boothroyd is certain to demand that his team give Grant plenty to do after he complained about the way they failed to finished off Blackpool in a surprise 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road last Saturday.

Boothroyd said: "It appeared that we thought that because we were top of the league that we would turn up and win and that is not the case.

"Blackpool were in the middle of an injury crisis, played for 120 minutes in the cup in midweek, travelled down 200 miles on a Friday, braved the M6 traffic and even had a flat tyre on the way. We should have penalised them for that.

"We've got Sheffield Wednesday next, and the players have got work to do – they know that."

The Hornets will also be bidding to take advantage of problems that are likely to leave Wednesday without Francis Jeffers (groin), Wade Small (ankle), Steve Watson (knee) and Tommy Spurr (thigh), while Richard Wood (groin) is a serious doubt.

Michael Johnson (Achilles) has recovered from the knock that he took at Norwich, and Etienne Esajas is back in contention after a back injury.

The Owls will be up against a striker they fancied in the summer – Darius Henderson – and a manager who is friend of Brian Laws. The Wednesday boss and his opposite number have been colleagues on coaching and management courses in the past.

Laws said: "Watford are top of the League and it's going to be difficult to play against them. But they don't frighten me. I don't want our players to be frightened of them either.

"Blackpool dominated the game and probably should have won.

"Watford are direct and play percentage football. They are strong in the air and at set pieces. They are the division's most consistent team at the moment – but they're not unbeatable."
