Garry Monk reveals why Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood sat-out their defeat at Stoke City

Keiren Westwood missed Sheffield Wednesday's 3-2 defeat to struggling Stoke City because of a shoulder injury, boss Garry Monk has revealed.

The Republic of Ireland international, who recently lost the No 1 spot to Cameron Dawson, was a notable absentee from the matchday squad. In Westwood's absence, Joe Wildsmith deputised on the bench.

"He felt he had pain in his shoulder in training so he ruled himself out so that's why he wasn't in the squad," said Monk.

Westwood has appeared 14 times this season, but Dawson has started the last seven matches in between the sticks.

Wednesday fell to fifth in the Championship after suffering their first loss in seven matches.

Monk said: “We weren’t at the races for the first hour. Although we came back into it and got our noses in front, we didn’t really deserve anything from the game.”
