But the Owls boss was able to report positive news on the rest of his squad, with forward Fernando Forestieri expected to be back in training next week and Keiren Westwood back in full contention after a shoulder niggle.

The return of Liam Palmer, injured in an ugly-looking tackle by Cardiff City’s Junior Hoilett on December 29, will have to wait though.

Asked whether aside from Fletcher he had any new injury concerns, Monk said: “No others.

“Fernando should be out on the training pitches next week and Liam Palmer, hopefully, will be back at the back end of next week.

“But we’ll see. It’s still very sore, that one [Palmer].

“And then there’s Fletcher, but the rest are fully available.”

Westwood last made the Owls bench for the home defeat against Bristol City on December 22.

He has had to watch on as Cameron Dawson has taken the Wednesday gloves and has not played since playing his role in a last-gasp defeat at West Brom in November.

There will be added clamour for the return of Forestieri given Fletcher’s absence, the Argentina-born former Italy youth international having not stepped out since his first-half display at Charlton Athletic in November.

The forward was seen stepping up his rehabilitation at the club’s Middlewood Road training ground earlier this week.
