McGeady, who spent the latter part of the 2015/16 season season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, has been at the Stadium of Light since 2017.

It is understood he is not currently training and he was told on Tuesday that he would be allowed to leave for nothing.

The forward has faced criticism from supporters after pictures circulated on social media appeared to show the former Everton man eating at a McDonalds restaurant with teammate and fellow former Owls man Chris Maguire after their 1-0 defeat at Gillingham on Saturday.

And there were reports of a bust-up involving the 33-year-old – the Black Cats’ highest-paid player – at the club’s training ground this week.

He signed a one-year contract extension keeping him at the club until 2021 in July.

Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson, under fire himself with his side sat in 11th place in the League One table, confirmed that the club would be looking to move McGeady on in the next transfer window.

He said: “We have spoken to Aidy about January and moving on and we feel it is fair to him to tell him now to give him the opportunity to sort something out.

“It gives me the opportunity to concentrate on the team moving forward and we feel it is the best decision for him going forward.” McGeady played 13 games for Wednesday, scoring one goal, as the club reached the Championship play-off final.
