Pearson has succeeded Quique Sanchez Flores at Vicarage Road, having held discussions with the Premier League's bottom club this week. He has agreed a deal until the end of the season and may be in the stands when the Hornets host Crystal Palace tomorrow, with Hayden Mullins taking charge of the side as interim boss.

"Nigel comes with all of the experience and success we believe can have a very positive impact on our season," Watford chairman Scott Duxbury said.

Pearson, who skippered Wednesday when the South Yorkshire club lifted the League Cup in 1991, has been out of work after being axed by Belgian club Leuven in February.

The 56-year-old last managed in the Premier League at Leicester City but was sacked in May 2015 and replaced by Claudio Ranieri, with the Foxes winning the Premier League title the following season.

Watford are rock-bottom, having won once all season, and are seven points off safety.
