Carlos doesn’t need to leave Owls: Helan

Jeremy Helan hopes Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal will remain at Hillsborough despite persistent speculation linking him with the vacant manager’s job at Swansea City.

Carvalhal’s odds on succeeding Garry Monk at the Liberty Stadium have been shortened to 11/2 by SkyBet, with the Portuguese just behind Roberto di Matteo, Gus Poyet and Alan Curtis.

The 50-year-old, who has steered Wednesday into seventh place in the Championship, refused to comment on the speculation following their 3-0 Boxing Day success over Birmingham City.

But Helan told The Star: “Carlos is doing a very good job. What he has been doing here has been recognised by the people. He has done well so why would he leave?

“I don’t see a reason for him to leave to be honest. He could earn a promotion with this club and be the manager that won promotion.”

Ipswich’s late win at home to Queen Park Rangers stopped Carvalhal’s side from moving into the play-off positions ahead of today’s mouth-watering trip to second-placed Middlesbrough.

Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri has also moved to play down any talk of a move away from Hillsborough for Carvalhal.

Speaking in a TV interview on Sunday, the man who brought Carvalhal to Wednesday expressed his delight with the job that the head coach is doing so far.

Chansiri said: “I like Carlos very much and I love our team now. It is speculation.”
